The Medieval and Later Pottery Research Group offers small grants to support research and dissemination in the field of post-Roman ceramics. Grant applications are invited from MLPRG members only, and should fall into at least one of the following categories:
- Analysis, including scientific analyses and radiocarbon dating
- Preparation of illustrative material (line drawings, photographs, reconstructions, etc)
- Support for local groups in sourcing specialist ceramic work
- Consolidation and deposition of ceramic archives, both physical and digital
- Publication grants
- Preparation of exhibition boards or other interpretative material
Grants cannot cover:
- Equipment
- Travel, unless integral to a programme of work covered by the categories above (NB individual travel grants are covered by the John Hurst Travel fund)
- Other personal expenses such as accommodation
The grants should not cover work that should be funded by other bodies (eg developer-funded projects) but could cover synthetic work based on material recovered during such projects, or research further to the legitimate scope of the original project.
The work covered by the grant application should have clearly defined objectives and accessible outcomes and should wherever possible contribute to the priorities set out in MLPRG’s current Research Framework (2011). MLPRG is particularly keen to encourage new initiatives and inter-disciplinary work.
Grants will be awarded for work to be started within one year of the award; there should be a clear programme and end date for the work. Where the grant is awarded for publication costs, completion will be taken to be the final submission to, and acceptance by, the nominated publication vehicle. Publication of results in MLPRG’s own journal, Medieval Ceramics is encouraged but need not be restricted to this outlet. All grants must be fully acknowledged in any publication or other form of dissemination.
